OpenStax is a non-profit textbook publisher, learning software producer, and platform for learning research-based at Rice University. Our mission is to provide every student with free or low-cost access to high-quality learning materials and tools that help them succeed in their education and career. We have created a library of over 40 free and openly licensed college textbooks that serve nearly four million students (as of summer 2020), resulting in $300 million dollars in savings annually. We are embarking on an ambitious and exciting strategic initiative to create a unified OpenStax experience for the faculty and students that use our textbooks and learning tools. We are creating a compelling student experience for our entire library that generates meaningful insights that we can use to improve student performance and learning.

The marketing automation specialist is a key OpenStax team member who helps plan the overall email strategy, including email communications throughout the customer lifecycle, journey building, and more. This position will also coordinate and execute the team’s email campaigns and sends, manage Pardot and its interactions with Salesforce, lead marketing automation efforts within the marketing team, and participate in additional marketing activities as needed.

Skills Required

  • Demonstrated mastery of Pardot, including general administration, lead scoring, syncing with Salesforce, email marketing, Engagement Studio, and landing page and form design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to develop digital marketing assets, including but not limited to email and landing page design, lead capture form creation, building engagement studio programs, email and newsletter templates

  • Ability to strategize and execute email marketing campaigns, including testing and QA

  • Ability to work alongside the Salesforce administrators to ensure database cleanliness, effective lead scoring, sync with Salesforce, and campaign execution
  • Ability to provide guidance and consulting on advanced email marketing tactics including dynamic content, personalization strings, and A/B testing

Working Conditions

Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. central standard time

Additional hours may be required during evenings and weekends to meet deadlines.

This position is expected to be remote as needed in response to university needs and will be required to equip a home office including secure, high-speed internet.

Essential Functions

Additional Functions Or Information

  • Owns the organization’s email efforts, including all Pardot and Salesforce (CRMS) sends, and ensures all email communications are tested, up to date, and on brand
  • Regularly generates meaningful reports on OpenStax’s email efforts that measure their effectiveness in reaching the goal of the campaign
  • Works with the marketing and communications team to contribute to the development of marketing strategies for OpenStax products and services, and leads the developing, testing, sending, and reporting email efforts
  • Generates Salesforce reports and works with the Salesforce admin to improve integration and create visualizations, as needed
  • Fulfills general marketing and communications duties to support the team as assigned
