Underground Cellar is a Y Combinator and VC-backed startup based in San Francisco that is currently experiencing hyper-growth. We’ve ‘gamified’ wine sales through our addictive e-commerce platform that gives buyers a great value through “upgrades”, allowing wineries to quickly sell wine without resorting to brand-damaging discounts. Underground Cellar has become the most exciting way to buy wine in the world, with over 1,000,000 bottles sold to thousands of customers through the platform.
We’re looking for someone to jump right in and join a highly-effective and talented team of people who are solving challenging problems and learning from one another. We value talent and dedication just as much as we encourage creativity and passion. Join our team!
What you will do and the impact you’ll have:
As our Email Marketing Manager, you’ll be responsible for leading Underground Cellar’s #1 marketing channel: email. Each day, tens of thousands of customers eagerly await our emails, which announce limited time offers on our daily curated collections of the best wines in the world. Our emails are fun, educational, and entertaining - with a loyal following of people who WANT to receive our emails! The Email Marketing Manager oversees every aspect of those emails - helping to set the calendar, identifying the target audiences, designing and implementing the campaigns, developing creative promotions, executing A/B testing strategies, and reporting performance metrics back to the team. Oh, did we mention we send A LOT of emails? You’ll need to be comfortable and confident executing this process over and over and over with no room for error.
As Email Marketing Manager, you will interact with almost every department at Underground Cellar. You thrive on working with a large team to get things done. You will work with Design on email templating, Business on data and metrics, Offer planning on setting the calendar, In-house wine experts on content, and Engineering on optimizing our email flows. The ideal candidate will have had a past role as an Email Marketing Manager or similar (such as Content Lead), where you created successful, interesting campaigns that drove sales and kept the buyer coming back for more. This role demands a creative thinker, someone willing to pitch the ordinary AND the extraordinary to the Head of Marketing and the entire Marketing Team. Finally, this role demands someone who is at the top of their game - think you are the best at email marketing? We’d love to find out.
Did we mention that customers actually WANT to receive our emails? Imagine working for a company who can say that…
Experience & Skill Set
Not only are you a fantastic wordsmith and writer, but you know exactly how to capture people’s attention and hold it. You’ve spent years perfecting your craft, and don’t just see email as just another marketing channel. Instead, you view it as the company’s voice. While people often think of you as a wordsmith and storyteller, you feel just as comfortable analyzing a spreadsheet or pouring over results with a coworker from analytics. You want to roll up your sleeves and get to work - while you set the strategy and vision for UC’s content via email distribution, you also are excited to do the actual work.
Additional Traits We’re Looking For
- 4+ years experience leading email marketing or content marketing initiatives at high-growth b2c or direct-to-consumer companies
- Creative wordsmith and storyteller, with a highly analytical and quantitative-based approach to thinking
- Experience driving results through email conversion-rate-optimization
- Experience with A/B testing and transactional email flow optimization
- Can work with a high level of autonomy, while rallying your teammates to execute at a high level alongside you
- Can hustle, while still maintaining attention to detail
- Relentlessly resourceful with an adaptive attitude, willing to roll with the punches and experiment with new ideas
- Interested in wine, but prior wine industry experience is not necessary
