We’re looking to bolster our marketing and membership team with an experienced, innovative and passionate Email Marketing Manager to join Quartz’s growing membership business.

The ideal candidate will be equally analytical and creative, relying on data and testing to identify new ways to drive and grow acquisitions, engage, retain and build loyalty with our members through email, onsite, app and new channels you uncover.


You will lead the email acquisitions and membership onboarding process through strategic planning, execution and analysis, working with stakeholders across marketing, product, editorial and other related departments. You will own the email acqusition CRM strategy end to end, mapping out the customer lifecycle journey from first contact to win-back campaigns. You will offer insights and segmentation recommendations for new subscriber acquisition and help to analyze and interpret data to increase LTV and reduce churn among members. You will also serve as a subject matter expert across the entire organization, providing consultation and best practices for email marketing.

Beyond developing and managing these campaigns, you will help to design and optimize the system that we use to send these communications. This role will help influence decision making and planning as we migrate to a new marketing and customer data technology stack including a new CRM (Segment) and membership platform (Piano).

What you’ll do

  • Plan, implement and optimize CRM strategies across multiple marketing channels with an emphasis on email marketing to drive acquisition, engagement and loyalty.
  • Partner with Analytics to extract and analyze insight from customer data to uncover areas of opportunity that will optimize lifecycle journeys.
  • Recommend segmentation, targeting, lifetime value, and personalization tactics to improve engagement and maximize marketing return on investment.
  • Develop messaging, copy and creative by segment and channel.
  • Write email campaign creative briefs for projects and work with design on development and implementation.
  • Analyze email marketing campaign performance and trends.
  • Produce and present reports to understand effectiveness and performance.
  • Be a thought leader and subject matter expert on current best practices, technologies, and innovations.

What you’ll bring:

  • 3+ years in a email/customer marketing role
  • Experience leveraging customer segmentation and customer journeys to deliver personalization
  • Familiar with CRM technology including Segment, ESPs (SendGrid preferred), segmentation tools, and complex data structures and systems
  • Understanding of AB/MVT testing strategies
  • Strong analytical skills; able to create data-driven marketing strategies and campaigns end to end
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to a fast-paced environment of multiple priorities, executing in the short term while developing long-term strategies
  • Proven ability to work cross functionally
  • Working knowledge of WordPress and HTML is a plus
  • Experience with subscription products or prior work in publishing/other subscription-based industry a plus
  • Ability to effectively manage across multiple stakeholders in a matrixed organization
  • Proven team player with ability to roll up your sleeves
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
