The Chartered Institute of Fundraising is the membership organisation for professional fundraisers in the UK. Currently the Institute supports and provides services for 6,000 individual members and nearly 600 organisational members. Members and non-members access training, qualifications, conferences and events, policy and guidance. The Chartered Institute is also the home of the Remember a Charity campaign and public fundraising Compliance team (formerly PFRA). The Chartered Institute facilitates more than 30 volunteer-led regional and special interest groups which organise local networks, events and conferences


The marketing & digital team ensure all our marketing is audience-focused, helping us engage with the right people at the right time with the right proposition. We lead the way we interact with our key audiences to achieve long term engagement resulting in more people: joining the Chartered Institute and engaging with our networks; learning through our qualifications; and attending our events and conferences, including Fundraising Convention, the biggest charity event of its kind in Europe. The team is responsible for our website, email communications, social media presence, advertising partnerships, content creation and the Chartered Institute of Fundraising brand.


The Email Marketing Manager will play a key role in the Marketing & Digital team with specific responsibility for managing and delivering a busy email communication schedule. In October we moved to a new email platform Dotdigital. They will manage the way we interact with our key audiences via email to achieve long term engagement resulting in more people: joining the Chartered Institute and engaging with our networks; learning through our qualifications; and attending our events and conferences, including Fundraising Convention, the biggest charity event of its kind in Europe. This role will also lead on the development of membership email journeys and the content opportunities of our member benefit platforms – My Career and Membership Plus.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Schedule, build, quality assure and dispatch emails:
  • Develop and manage the overall email schedule and strategy in accordance with marketing plans for specific products and activities.
  • Manage the build and dispatch of our marketing emails
  • Commission, edit and write content as required for scheduled emails
  • Ensure testing and optimisation of all email sends
  • Manage the build and dispatch of our member newsletters and work with the Content Manager to improve engagement
  • Provide email marketing support for our work in the Nations
  • Set up new automated email journeys for our members Insight and content innovation:
  • Write creative copy to keep members up to date with developments from the Chartered Institute and the fundraising sector via our member emails and to promote and market our events, training and qualifications to fundraisers
  • Use your knowledge of segmentation, targeting, dynamic content and responsive design to improve open and click through rates
  • Measure the success of email campaigns and use those lessons to improve future campaigns
  • Produce quarterly email reports and analysis and provide recommendations on changes needed to improve email KPI’s
  • Produce email banner assets via InDesign template
  • Responsible for the branding and technical support of our member benefit platforms – My Career and Membership Plus and identifying content opportunities from the platforms to support member recruitment and retention across all marketing channels
  • Keep up to date with latest email and digital developments and their application.


Email & content support

  • Support the Groups Engagement Officer on managing the schedule and sign off of emails created by our Groups
  • Work with the Content Manager to identify digital content opportunities including utilising our flagship events and training
  • Work closely with the Business Improvement Lead to ensure the smooth integration of Dotdigital with our CRM (Microsoft Dynamics)
  • Provide training, as appropriate, to staff and volunteers on our email platform 


Person Specification Experience & Skills

  • Experience of using email platforms for direct marketing and/or member engagement
  • Experience of Dotdigital platform (desirable)
  • Experience of working with a range of stakeholders including suppliers while managing and delivering successful email campaigns
  • Experience of managing an email schedule
  • Excellent copywriting skills, which you can adapt for different audiences
  • Experience of reporting on email performance and insight
  • Experience of integrating email plans with a range of digital and social media channels to communicate with different audiences
  • Good understanding of marketing principles and data protection regulations
  • Experience of setting up automated email journeys and remarketing (desirable)
  • Experience of Adobe Creative Cloud including InDesign (desirable)
  • Experience of working with a charity or community or campaigning organisation (desirable)
