Email and Newsletter Product Manager, Observer Media

The Opportunity

The Newsletter and Email Product Manager role on the Product team will lead the product strategy, growth and performance of all email products, including newsletters, sales/marketing emails and alerts, for both Observer and Commercial Observer. Reporting directly to the VP of Product, this individual will be responsible for user acquisition and engagement with the ultimate goal of growing our engaged audience and revenue driven by newsletters, emails and alerts. They will have the opportunity to work closely with colleagues in editorial, marketing, sales, design & development who will support them in pursuing the ambitious goals they set out to achieve for the business.

As a Product Manager for newsletters, reporting to the VP Product for Observer Media, you will be responsible for helping our portfolio of emails reach its full potential.

The day to day:

  • Tirelessly pursue an amazing subscriber experience for our newsletters with mobile-friendly email templates, follow industry policies and best practices, graphics, personalization and advanced features
  • Be an expert in the newsletter space by staying on top of email trends and innovation
  • Managing referral programs as part of audience growth
  • Design and implement direct email marketing campaigns
  • Own processes of newsletter compilation, ad placement, automation and sends for 15+ campaigns per week
  • Define, monitor and analyze key performance metrics, and use this data to inform your ongoing list of hypotheses to test. Analyze campaign performance and suggest improvements
  • Own reporting on all relevant metrics (signups, deliverability, opens, clicks, unsubscribes, direct and indirect revenue, etc.) and proactively deliver analytical reports on emails/alerts, highlighting improvements and issues
  • Meet regularly with invested partners, communicate your team’s priorities and roadmap, solicit feedback and build consensus
  • Identify and document product requirements for features and functionality, and lead the product development cycle from discovery to delivery
  • Work with a cross-functional group of engineers, designers, and editorial partners to prioritize the most impactful work in the newsletter space
  • Partner with editors to Identify new opportunities for email, ranging from new products to add to the portfolio to ongoing optimizations
  • Balance the needs of readers and marketing partners in all email products
  • Identify target audience and grow our email list
  • Conceive of and implement strategies for acquiring new subscribers, working with the design and development teams to test and implement

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience at an online publisher working in an email marketing or audience development role responsible for content newsletter programs 
  • Direct experience with an enterprise-grade ESP; experience with Sailthru specifically is strongly preferred
  • Experience with relevant tools such as Google Analytics, Google Ad Manager, LiveIntent and Piano preferred
  • Ability to conduct sophisticated analysis of and create lucid presentations of performance data using Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication and project management skills
  • Strong collaboration skills including the ability to work with across different levels and functions in the organization
  • Knowledge of email best practices including CAN-SPAM and GDPR legislation
  • Knowledge of and experience working in a agile software development environment
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university required
